Missouri state in the north central United States. The name of the state is taken from the Missouri River and is an Angonquian name for a group that lived near the mouth of the river.The capital city is Jefferson City.Missouri became know as the Gateway to the West because the state served as the starting point for the great overland routes to California and Oregon.The official nickname was added in 1899, when Congresman Willard D. Vandiver said:"i come from a country that raises corn and cotto and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloqunce neither convinces nor satisfies me. I'm from Missouri. You've got to show me." After that, Missouri became know as the Show Me State.
